Choosing a Winner
You can read the winning essay from the Fall 2018 scholarship winner, Marissa Heffernan, a senior at the University of Arizona in Tucson, here.
Policygenius is a New York City-based, online insurance marketplace helping people get the coverage they need — and feel good about it. We want people to feel informed about what they’re shopping for, so we get rid of all the jargon and actually make personal finance fun.
And when it’s time to shop for and buy coverage for any aspect of life — from health and life insurance to pet and renters insurance — consumers feel ready. We’ve built the full tech stack for insurance to make it an easier experience for consumers. We’ve been around since 2014, and were one of the early pioneers in the insuretech space. The company was named one of Inc. Magazine’s Best Workplaces 2018.
Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident of the United States. Employees of Policygenius, its parents, affiliates and subsidiaries, participating, advertising and promotion agencies, and prize suppliers (and members of their immediate family and/or those living in the same household of each such employee) are not eligible.
Applicant must either be a current high school or home school senior graduating from an accredited high school between September 2018 and December 2018 and will be attending an accredited U.S. college or university during the spring semester 2019 or a current college freshman, sophomore, or junior who will be enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. college or university for the spring 2019 semester.
Recipient will receive a one-time scholarship payment of $3,000 to be applied toward undergraduate tuition for the 2018 - 2019 academic year. Funds are provided by Policygenius. Payments are issued by Policygenius, made payable to the student's approved college or university and mailed within 30 to 60 days after notification to the recipient of their award, directly to the accredited college or university last designated by the student.
The winner is selected after a team of judges reviews all entries, after the deadline of November 2, 2018 at 11:59:59 p.m. PST. Applicants are judged on thoughtfulness, insight and writing mechanics, as well as any other parameters the editorial board sees fit. The winner will be announced on December 5, 2018.
Conditions of Award: If any other funds cover the tuition entirely for the student's 2018-2019 academic year, the student is no longer eligible to receive this scholarship and will forfeit the award.
The institution must be a four-year accredited institution and listed on the official website of the U.S. Department of Education. All school transfers are subject to accreditation approval.
The recipient must be actively enrolled full-time as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior, for the spring 2019 semester and for the entire academic year without interruption, barring illness, emergency, or military service. It is the recipient's responsibility to verify receipt of funds with their designated institution and notify Policygenius should the award check not arrive on or about 30 days from the issue date.
