Life insurance is an important piece of every family’s financial plan. It provides a lump-sum payout to your loved ones in a worst-case scenario. But putting that financial safety net in place can certainly feel daunting.

Policygenius makes it easy to compare and buy life insurance online. How? Well, for starters, we provide free quotes from over a dozen life insurers — no email address or phone number required. And, once you formally submit your application, our licensed experts will walk you through every step of the process. (They’ll also handle your paperwork.)

Not sure what that entails? Here’s a look at how our quote comparison and application process works.

1. Click on ‘Life’

Policygenius can help you shop for many different types of insurance, including homeowners, auto and disability insurance. When you come to our homepage, you’ll be asked what product you’re looking to buy. Click on the ‘life’ box in the upper left corner to get — you guessed it! — life insurance quotes.

step 1

2. Enter some basic information

Life insurance rates are based on a variety of factors. Chief among them are age, gender and location — which is why we ask about those things before pulling your quotes.

step 2

3. Tell us a bit about your health

Conditions like asthma, high blood pressure and sleep apnea can lead to higher life insurance rates, as can unhealthy habits like smoking. You’ll be asked to flag any of these conditions before pulling your life insurance quotes because we want to show you the most accurate prices possible — but don’t let a health condition delay your search. We specialize in helping people with certain profiles find the most affordable life insurance policy available to them.

step 3

4. If necessary, add a few more details

If you do have a health condition, we’ll ask some follow-up questions. The screenshot below shows the questions you’ll be asked after checking the box for “high cholesterol”.

step 4

These questions are designed to help you get the most accurate life insurance quotes. If you’re unsure of the details, go ahead and give us your best guess. Note: We won’t share this information with anyone.

5. Select your coverage

Next, you’ll be asked to select a coverage amount, the lump sum your loved ones will receive if anything happens to you while the policy is in effect, and a coverage term, the length of time your coverage lasts.

step 5

We generally recommend you buy coverage in an amount up to 10x your income with a term long enough to get to retirement, but don’t stress if you’re unsure of where to start. Once you get your quotes, you can adjust the coverage amount and term to see different price points and get a better sense of what you can afford. Our licensed experts are also on hand to lend support, if needed.

6. Compare carriers

Policygenius shows you quotes from multiple carriers. You can compare insurers by price, financial strength, customer service ratings and more. You can also play around with policy terms and features to get a sense of your options.

step 6

7. Select a policy

Once you’ve settled on a coverage amount, we suggest selecting the cheapest policy. You aren’t locked into applying with the insurer you select at this part of the process and, ultimately, the Policygenius team will help you select what insurer is best for you. Once you hit that big orange “continue” button, we’ll ask for your name, phone number and email.

step 7

8. Formally submit your application

You’ll have to enter a few more details, including your address and income, before formally kicking off your life insurance application.

step 8

After you submit your application, a Policygenius expert will call you to verify a few details. (We have to for compliance purposes.) We’ll also schedule your life insurance medical exam.

As you go through the process, you’ll be able to track the status of your application by logging onto our website. And, of course, you can speak directly to a licensed expert if you need more guidance or assistance.
