Updated Jan. 1, 2020: Becoming an Airbnb host is pretty straightforward. Get a quick monthly estimate for your space. Check your local laws, update your homeowners or renters insurance policy, create a listing and you’re on your way.
Excelling at your new side gig takes a little more time and effort. You have to meet basic requirements to stay on Airbnb’s marketplace. Plus, if you’re hoping your spare space will fast-track your retirement, it’ll need to stand out among the more than 5 million listings.
Fortunately, you can dramatically improve your hosting capabilities with a trip to your favorite bulk retailer and a day or two prepping the space. Consider this checklist all you need to become an Airbnb host. (Bonus: There’s a mini-version you can download and print out at the end of this post.)
As one of its five basic requirements, Airbnb asks all hosts to provide the following amenities.
Fresh towels (minimum one per guest)
Pillows (minimum one per guest)
Local laws sometimes require Airbnb hosts to take specific safety measures. Consider these supplies crucial, even if your city doesn’t mandate them.
Working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors
First aid kit
Airbnb emergency safety card print out
Think like a hotelier and have these supplies ready for your guests upon arrival.
Bed linens and blankets
Drawers and shelf space
You receive superhost status — and priority placement — by achieving a 4.8-plus overall rating, maintaining 90% response rate, hosting at least 10 stays per year and honoring all reservations. Here are some amenities to help get you there.
A safe for storing valuables
Pen and paper
Assorted coffee and tea
Water or bottled beverages
Milk or cream
Salt and pepper
Wine glasses and tumblers
Books and magazines
Basic cleaning supplies are handy for guests, but you’ll also want to stock up on these items so you can get the space ready for your next reservation.
Consider packaging a few essentials with a some bonus perks and a nice note. It’s a great way to reiterate your house rules, relay or review safety information and score a five-star rating. Your Airbnb welcome basket can include the following items.
