This $1 drink is the ultimate treatment for the common cold

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that each year, the average adult has two to three colds. There is no cure. The only recommended treatment is lots of rest and plenty of fluids.

The National Institutes of Health, meanwhile, reports that the placebo effect — the beneficial health outcome that results from a person’s anticipation that an intervention will help — is real.

It stands to reason, then, that the ultimate treatment for the common cold is lots of rest and plenty of fluids, plus a special something that you believe is helping you get better.

Enter this cold-fighting super drink that utilizes several ingredients popular in traditional remedies to help you up your fluid intake while tapping into the power of natural medicine. It includes anti-inflammatory ginger, immune-boosting lemon, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, and throat-soothing honey.

Best of all, this drink is easy to make with ingredients you probably already have at home. If not, a quick trip to the grocery store can mean your kitchen is stocked for the season.

Cold-fighting super drink recipe

  • 1/2-inch piece of fresh ginger, grated or chopped
  • 1/2-inch piece of fresh turmeric, grated or chopped
  • 1 teaspoon unfiltered apple cider vinegar
  • Juice of half a small lemon
  • Boiling water
  • Honey to taste

Put all ingredients except honey in a teapot; add boiling water; let steep for five minutes; pour or strain into a mug, then add honey to taste. You can also just put all ingredients straight in a mug, if you’re okay with your drink being a little pulpy.

Drink one to two cups a day as soon as you start to feel a cold coming on and throughout your illness. You can double or triple the recipe and keep it in a thermos to sip all day long.

Note on amounts: These are approximations. Make your cold-fighting super drink to taste. You can’t go wrong or overdo it with any of these ingredients. This is flexible and forgiving recipe. The important thing is to create a mix that tastes and feels good to you. Feel better!
