Here's the average tax refund in every state

Updated Jan. 8, 2021: For most Americans, tax season means a nice refund. In 2020, 126 million Americans received a refund (a 12% increase from last year) and the average amount was $3,267, according to the IRS.

You’ll typically receive a refund if your employer withheld too much from your paychecks or you didn’t claim deductions, credits or exemptions you were eligible for. While receiving a chunk of change in the mail is a nice surprise, it typically means your paychecks were lower than they should have been. (You can learn more about how tax refunds work here.)

The average tax refund amount varies geographically. We took a look at the average refund by state, based on 2020 data from the IRS.
