Having pets is a lot like having kids, a first relationship or movie-theater nachos. Inevitably, there’s going to be a mess. Whether it’s a piddle on the kitchen floor, barf on the sofa, a hairball in your shoe or, worst of all, doggy diarrhea on your favorite rug, the messes are just part of the furry, lovable package. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get way more purrs and wags than you do poop and vomit.
The bottom line is, if you have pets, you’re probably going to need some serious cleaning remedies. (And, while we're on the topic a poop and vomit, also a good idea: pet insurance. You can go here to learn when protecting a pet is worth it.)
Sadly, finding quality products that actually work can be challenging. Having had a bevy of pets (and messes) over the years, I feel like I’ve tried all of the products. No, really. All of them. Some are seriously great, while others … well, you may as well pour the product down the sink and blow on your mess because that’ll be just as effective.
Here are three of my all-time favorite cleaning products aimed at keeping your home poop-, pee- and vomit-stain (and odor) free. Bonus: I’m also including one of my favorite non-cleanser odor eliminators for general smells like stinky dog, cat litter and even cooking odors.
##1. Sunny & Honey Pet Stain & Odor Miracle
This is hands down the best product I’ve ever used when it comes to eliminating odors from pet accidents. This bio-enzymatic cleaner from Sunny & Honey Products actually breaks down the odor-causing bacteria in your pet’s accident, so it doesn’t just mask odors, it eliminates them.
I’ve used it on fabric, carpeting, wool-silk blend rugs and even wood, tile and concrete. It’s always been safe as far as color fastness goes, but they do advise you do a test before going to town on that stain. The “spring mint” scent leaves a really nice freshness behind, and best of all, the company donates 10% of its profits to help animals. One drawback: This product’s stain-eliminating powers are good, but if the stain is really bad, you may need some backup. That’s when I turn to...
##2. Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover
This stuff doesn’t eliminate odors, but when I have a seriously tough stain on my carpet or upholstery, this is what I turn to and it never lets me down. And it’s not just great for pet stains. I’ve used it to remove a slosh on the sofa from a glass of red wine, coffee dribbles on the staircase carpet and even blood and makeup stains.
##3. Bissell Pawsitively Clean Stain & Odor Eliminator
Like the Sunny & Honey product mentioned above, this product also uses enzymes to break down the odor-causing agents in your pet stains. What makes it noteworthy is it comes with a black light that allows you to see pet urine stains that would otherwise go undetected. So, if your pet likes to do the sneaky pees, this product is great for finding the source of the odor and eliminating it. It also contains something called PHEROBLOC that helps prevent future accidents in that area.
##Bonus: Pet Odor Exterminator Candle
If you’re like me, and you’re hyper sensitive to pet odors like cat litter or dogs that just stay stinky no matter how often you bathe them, these candles are little jars of wonderment. They are long lasting (an estimated 70-hour burn time), and they come with a 100% money-back guarantee if you aren’t satisfied. They also come in literally dozens of scents, so it’s easy to find one that suits your personal preference. I like the Lavender with Chamomile, but you may find Delicious Pancakes, Bamboo Breeze or Summer Storm the perfect way to keep your fur baby from getting on your very last olfactory nerve.
